The Nigerian High Commission in South Africa is currently unable to issue visas for business, visitor or tourist applicants wishing to visit the country.
This is because the commission has ran out of visa labels.
A visa label is placed in the holder’s passport or travel document, and contains information about the holder’s entitlements to travel to and stay in the country that he or she is visiting, as well as other conditions (such as the ability to work or study.
Those seeking for visas into Nigeria are being turned back or asked to return at a future date.
The development is already causing tension among applicants as they are unable to meet scheduled appointments and transact business in Nigeria.
It was gathered that the High Commission has advised businessmen and travellers who desperately need to travel to Nigeria to contact the Nigeria’s embassies or consulates in other nearest countries.
It was also learnt that the commission has also stopped the issuance of new passports.
Nigerians, who throng the commission’s office for the new passport, were told to come back at a later date.
They were told that the machine that produces the passport is faulty and has been sent to Nigeria for repairs.
