The Nigerian Senate has ordered security agencies in the country to immediately arrest and prosecute anybody calling for the breakup of Nigeria.
Senate gave the order at plenary on Wednesday, June 14 after deliberating on the motion: The need for National Unity and Peaceful Coexistence in Nigeria.
The motion was raised in response to the persistent calls for secession in the south-east and the controversy generated by the quit notice issued on all Igbos residing in the north by a coalition of Arewa youth groups.
Contributing to the motion, Senator Shehu Sani, stated that it was not unusual in the history of a nation not to face this kind of issue, from the south, east, north and west.
He however urged politicians to have the courage and conviction to desist from making avoidable mistakes that could plunge the country into crisis.
